Management Students Forum (MSF)


 
The Management Students Forum (MSF), established in 1988, is a 
non-profit charitable trust registered under the Bombay Public 
Trust Act, 1952. It comprises the alumni and the present 
students of The Faculty of Management Studies, MS University 
of Baroda. The autonomous nature of MSF enables the members to 
bring out their hidden potential and develop organisational 
abilities. It strives to:
1. Inculcate team building, leadership qualities and provide 
   organisational experience essential to the professional life 
   of prospective managers. 
2. Promote an active Industry-Academic interaction so as to give 
   a practical dimension to the learning process. 



MILESTONES.
Each year the Forum organizes at least one major event besides
numerous Guest Lectures, Symposia, Quiz Competitions and 
Workshops. Till date the Forum has organized six National 
Seminars - INNOVA '96, DRISHTI '94, AD-2000 and others, three 
Financial Trade Fairs - FINVEST 95, FINVEST 93, FINVEST 92. 
The Class of ’99 participated in the successful organization 
of "MARQUEST - 99", "HR WEEK’98" and 
"DISHA - A DIRECTION FOR TOMORROW".
And the Class - Y2K successfully organized MarQuest '2000

HR WEEK (1998)
The week long event was inaugurated by Prof. Mayank Dholakiya, 
Dean, Faculty of Management Studies and Ms. Purnima Karwat, a 
leading HR Consultant of Baroda. The event was organised to 
provide a platform for interaction between students and members 
of the industry on various issues related to the field of Human 
Resource Management. From the strategic viewpoint, organisations 
today need to get leverage from their own strengths as never 
before. Hence, by having proper HR practices, any organisation 
can transform its workforce into such strength, so as to gain a 
competitive advantage. 

For the first five days, evening sessions were held, with 
Management Games and Lectures. The sessions were addressed by 
eminent personalities like Mr. Y. Shriram (GM-HRD, ABB Ltd.), 
Mr. Bharat Mehta (Head-HR, Meditronics Ltd.), Mr. Ashok Chandra 
(Manager-HRD, Gujarat Gas Company Ltd.), Dr. CM Lamba (Director-
Personnel, IPCL) and Mr. Anjani Koomar (VP- General Motors (India)
Ltd.). The event culminated with an "Assessment Centre" and an 
"In Basket" exercise conducted by Prof. TV Rao and a panel 
discussion featuring among others Dr. Udai Pareek, 
Dr. Mallika Sarabhai, Mr. P Chidambaram Iyer and 
Mrs. Padma Ramchandran.

DISHA (1997) - A Direction For Tommorrow
With the influx of global giants in the Indian marketplace the 
domestic players need to embrace newer strategies for survival 
and growth. A one-day seminar DISHA organised on 24th of August’97
in Vadodara addressed the twin issues of Managing Joint Ventures 
and Strategic options for Indian brands vis-à-vis Global brands.
Inaugurated by Dr. HB Desai (Former Director, IIFT), the seminar 
was addressed by personalities from the organisations who have 
implemented these strategies successfully. The speakers were 
Mr. Kishor Jhala (Group Product Manger, GCMMF), Mr. T Kawai 
(Director, L&T – Chiyoda), Mr. Keith Sheldon (VP Finance, 
General Motors (I) Ltd.), Mr. Nitin Mankad (Director, 
Stup Consultants) and Mr. Uday Baldota (GM, Sun Pharma Ltd.).

INNOVA (1996)- A Seminar On "Excellence Through Innovation"
A two-day seminar was organised to encapsulate the spirit of 
innovation at Centaur Hotel, Mumbai on 3rd and 4th of December 
1996. Eminent speakers addressed a gathering of select delegates 
on the importance and impact of innovations in all fields of 
management and recounted their experiences. Sessions at the 
seminar discussed the issues in the areas of Finance, Marketing, 
HRD and General Management.
Shri M.M.Kapoor (Director, UTI) inaugurated the seminar. 
Speakers to adress teh seminar were Dr. R.H. Patil, M.D.,NSE), 
Dr. Reena Ramchandran (CMD, Hindustan Organic Chemical Ltd), 
Mr. Vijay Advani (President and CEO, Templeton Asset Management, 
India), Dr. Raj Agnihotri (Sr. V.P., Reliance Industries Ltd.), 
Mr. Walter Vieira (President, Marketing Advisory Services Group), 
Mr. Anand Sudershan (V.P. Microland Ltd. ), Mr. Kalyan Banarjee 
(Director, United Phosphorus Ltd.), Mr. E.A. Kshirsagar 
(Director-in-charge, A.F. Ferguson & Co.), Sudhir Kadam

FINVEST ’95
The participants included Stock Exchanges, Mutual Funds, 
Finance Companies, Financial Institutions & Print media. The fair 
attracted a large crowd of approximately 10,000 people, which 
included investors, decision-makers and potential clients.

We had the honour of having amongst us the Honourable Union 
Minister of Commerce Shri P Chidambaram as our chief guest. 
Eminent speakers like Mr. Joseph Massey (Executive Director, VSE);
Mr. NM Govardhan (Chief Executive, LIC-MF); Dr. MM Kapoor 
(Executive Director, UTI-SEL); Mr. Kishor Gandhi (General Manager,
CRISIL) shared their valuable experiences during the fair.

DRISHTI (1994) – A Vision For Tommorrow’s Organisations
A one-day seminar cum workshop was organised at Hotel Welcomgroup,
Vadodara, on December 11, 1994 chaired by Prof. DM Pestonjee of 
IIMA, that provided a platform whereupon reputed management 
consultants addressed a gathering of select delegates from the 
senior management cadre on topical issues facing managers today. 
The event’s module included Business Process Reengineering, Case 
Studies and Human Resource Auditing.

The panel included Mr. PS Srinivasan (Director, AF Ferguson & Co.),
Mr. CS Damle (Sr. Consultant, AF Ferguson & Co.) and 
Mr. Tarun Sheth (Director, Shilputsi Consultants).

AD-2000 - A Seminar on Advertising & Marketing
The seminar held in March 1994 took a look into the future to 
align advertising towards challenges of the 21st century. The 
focus areas were: 
•Media Options •Research •Financial advertising •Client serving 
•Direct marketing and PR •Creative Development 

Speakers included Mr. Atul Tandon (MD, J.L. Morrison), 
Mr. P.R. P. Nair (Director, Everest Advertising), Mr. S.V. Sista 
(CMD, Sista's), Mr. Alan D'Souza (Director, Mudra International) 
and Mr. Parvez Balsara (Director, O & M Finance)

FINVEST ’93
The participants were representative of Stock Exchanges, Banks, 
State level Financial Institutions, Consumer finance companies, 
Venture finance companies, Insurance companies, leading 
Publications, the Income tax department, Vadodara as well as 
companies developing financial software.

The fair attracted nearly 5000 people including investors, 
potential clients, opinion makers and most importantly the common 
man.

Graced by the Honourable Union Finance Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, 
the fair-featured lecture sessions by eminent personalities like 
Dr. IG Patel (former Governor, RBI), Mr. Manu Shroff (Member-Finance 
Commission and former editor ‘The Economic Times’).

FINVEST’ 92
The Participants included Stock Exchanges (BSE and VSE), State level 
financial institutions (GIIC, iNDEXTb, GVFL), Consumer Finance Companies 
(Empire Fnance, GLFL, Bhavesh Finance, Transpek Finance), Portfilo 
Management Services (SDFC, Interface Capital markets), Insurance Companies,
Bank of Baroda, Financial Express and companies developing financial 
software among others.

The fair was inaugurated by the then Finance Minister of Gujarat, 
Mr. Chhabildas Mehta, Prominent personalities like Mr. Jaynarayan Vyas 
(ex-Executive Director, iNDEXTb), Mr. Manubhai Shah (Managing Trustee, 
CERC), Prof. Raghunathan (IIM-A), Mr. Ravi Mohan (CEO, OTCEI) and 
Mr. Khanna (Executive Director, VSE) shared their views.

CAPITAL MARKETS – Thrusts And Challenges
The seminar held in November 1991 at Hotel Taj International, Mumbai, was 
inaugurated by Mr. H.T. Parekh,( HDFC). The areas covered were capital 
market overview, innovations in the capital market, portfolio management, 
mutual funds, financial services, offshore financing, investor protection 
and credit rating.

Participants included leading functionaries from banks, financial 
institutions, investment companies, rating agencies and regulatory bodies. 
Among the prominent speakers were Mr. G.V. Ramkrishna (Chairman, UTI) 
and Mr. M.R. Mayya (Executive Director, BSE). Distinguished personalities 
like Mr. N.J.Jhaveri(Deputy MD, ICICI), Mr. R. Vishwanathan (MD, SBI 
Capital Markets) and R.L. Varshney (former Director, IIFT) voiced their 
views on the global business scene, management of international finance 
flows and challenges and strategies for global marketing.
